Been Gone a While

In the summer of 2010, I took a leave of absence from pastoral ministry to care for my mom who had come to live with us.  She had been diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer in 2007.  After surgery and several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she was weak.  Her pain, nausea, and diabetes weren’t well managed and it looked like she could go at any time.

It was a hard decision for her to move here.  She had to get rid of most of her things, sell her house in Paradise, CA, and leave her friends, co-workers, parents, and siblings behind.

At least here, she was closer to her kids and grandkids.

When she got here, she flourished.  The doctors got her pain and nausea under control.  And she was able to go off all of her medications for diabetes.  The cancer was still there (in fact, it had started spreading to her spine), but it seemed manageable.

She was with us for 20 months before she passed away December 24, 2011.  Over that last year, all of her family came to see her.  Many of them came several times.

I’m glad she came to live with us.  It wasn’t the easiest decision to make, but the sacrifice was well worth the rewards of getting to be with my mom during her last year.

I’m finally in a position to re-enter pastoral ministry.  I know the market is a little slow right now and things are tight in conferences all across the North American Division.  But I’m confident that God has a plan for using us again to grow His church and His kingdom.
